Is Tim Robinson's I Think You Should Leave the most quotable piece of media ever?
Airplane! had a good run. Anchorman held the crown for a long time. Shakespeare is fine, I guess.
But if life at our house is any indicator, ITYSL has been the one to beat since its debut in 2019. No matter the occasion or activity, we have a quote from the show locked at loaded.
Here's the best quote from every sketch for use in everyday life. These may not be the funniest quotes, or the most interesting... but they are the ones you will come back to time and time again as you try to go about your day.
Season 1
Episode 1: “Has This Ever Happened to You?”
Both Ways
"It actually goes both ways."
Tim's pronunciation of "both" seems to have an L snuck in, like "both". That is enough to make this little line an earworm that has a million everyday uses.
When to use it: Do absolutely anything wrong and get called out on it? Now you have a silver bullet rebuttal.
Has This Ever Happened to You?
"Walk... slowly."
This sketch gives an early look at how a simple premise can descend into madness on ITYSL. Here, the pranking plumbers go 'Turbo Time' and won't let Tim join in.
When to use it: See anyone go fast, ever? Your partner is rushing and stubs a toe or bumps into something? Here's what you can half-shout, in a weird stooping position.
Baby of the Year
"Get... him... out of here!"
Someone takes their hate for Bart Harley Jarvis a little too far, prompting the host (Sam Richardson) to forcefully use this phrase.
When to use it: Best used for any unwanted guest, human or otherwise. For us, living in the tropics, it's usually yelled about mosquitoes and other invasive pests. It's rarely a joke.
"No coffin please, just wet, wet mud."
In the second Tim-less sketch in a row, and the first with neither of the Detroiters, Vanessa Bayer shows how funny it is putting Tim's voice in other people. Every line of her horrendous instagram caption is quotable, but this one takes the cake.
When to use it: This one gets busted out after any rain at all. If I am describing the ground after rain, it is absolutely wet, wet, mud (no coffin please).
Gift Receipt
"You don't go anywhere near that!"
This might be the sketch with the most quoted lines at our house. It was the sketch that hooked us onto the show in the first place. Every ballistic thing Tim shouts at Steven Yeun is funnier than the last. But this line, delivered at max volume with the full body, is truly amazing.
When to use it: Especially useful if someone is going for the last slice of pizza, or any other coveted thing. Best to say this in the same unhinged manner that Tim does.
Episode: “Thanks for Thinking They Are Cool”
Biker Guy
"Okay!"
A biker guy is impressed an awed by a bike – a bicycle without a motor. Delivered with joy and curiosity similar to Marge's "Now I've seen everything" about the crazy crap on the wall at Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag.
It may be a short, goofy sketch with am alien biker race, but there are a million opportunities to give an impressed "Okay!" every day.
When to use it: See a vanity plate go by? See something new at a store? See a promo for a new game show? There's only one word to say.
River Mountain High
"Not really."
What makes incessant quoting of ITYSL different than Anchorman is that some of the most memorable lines in the show are ordinary things said inexplicably. Tim's teacher character has one of those instances here, after chugging arguably too long on a bottle of water.
The result is that, unlike saying "a whales vagina" over and over despite it never being a natural thing to say, you can quote ITYSL constantly by inflecting in a Tim-esque way. How many times a day do you say "not really"? Time to make it more fun.
When to use it: Any time you would say 'not really'. Delivered loudly and out of breath.
Wilson's Toupees
"He's so comfortable in his skin."
A toupee wearer is jealous of a bald guy at work, who is the life of the party despite his lack of hair. What
When to use it: Used when describing anyone ever. Friend, family, celebrity. As long as they aren't a toupee wearer.
Pink Bag
"This is a betrayal on levels that no one's ever seen!"
A man overreacts (are you sensing a theme?) to an innocent whoopee cushion prank.
Tim's florid descriptions of what pranks might be coming next are baffling – both from the idea that he is worried about them, and the incredibly unique grammar used in each one.
When to use it: Basically any invonvenience ever. Store is out of something? That's a betrayal on levels that no one's ever seen.
The Man
"It's not that gross!"
This sketch is oddly unquotable, despite its position as a favorite among both fans and casual ITSYL viewers. That may be because in a lot of ways it feels more like sketch that may be on another sketch show, say SNL. It's still very good, among the most memorable. But the comedy comes from Will Forte's characterization and delivery more than the lines themselves.
All that said, this line, said defensively after showing off a decidedly gross rat injury, is usable almost daily in real life.
When to use it: Anytime you're feeling defensive over someone else's disgust at you. Someone thinks your lunch is weird? Your partner recoils when you ask them to check out a mole? Here's your line.
